Artist Statement
It is Human nature to seek the cultural comfort of the familiar in a new atmosphere. By mixing two cultures, Indian and American, my intention is to achieve the familiar.
Traditional textiles have always been considered the identity symbols of their societies. Hence through this thesis ‘Woven Cultures’ my intention is to connect both cultures, Indian and American, in an object which is a fabric, visually providing familiar comfort by means of patterns.
The jacquard woven fabrics displayed here include traditional textile patterns from Indian saris. The compositions of theses fabrics reflect the layouts of Amish and Gee’s bend quilts. The sari embodies the identity of Indian woman and culture of India. Quilt making is a traditional craft of the United States with many regional variations. By taking both the saris and the quilt patterns out of their original context, I have tried to give them a new identity while preserving a sense of the familiar.
